Agreement reached at Los Monteros

A new deal has been signed to re-open the five star hotel in Marbella.

The workers’ committee at the luxury Los Monteros Hotel in Marbella has signed an agreement to reopen the establishment with the representative of the owner, the Russian magnate, Ernest Malyshev. If all goes to plan it means an end to eight months of conflict at the 5 star hotel. El País reports the deal was drawn up in the offices of the CCOO union in Marbella and includes the payment of 1.8 million € in back pay to some 60 workers.

A total of 72 workers will remain at the establishment, picked on the basis of category and time working there, to reopen the hotel. The rest of the workers are to be given a four month temporary lay off.  However Lola Villalba, secretary for tourism in the CCOO union in Málaga, noted that the owner had failed to meet three previous agreements, but everyone hoped normality could be resumed. The agreement comes after Social Security embargoed the beach club of the hotel and the Prosecutors’ Office denounced the owner on charges of acting against the rights of the workers.
